In the second article of this series, we turn our focus to the cultural and charitable dimensions of RomLux’s activity – two areas that have shaped its identity and the way it connects people.
Since its founding in 2007 – a symbolic year marking Romania’s accession to the European Union and Sibiu’s joint title with Luxembourg as European Capital of Culture – RomLux has become a catalyst for dialogue and cultural interchanges between the two countries.
From business to culture – a community with impact
Over the past 18 years, RomLux has gone far beyond its role as a business network. Through cultural events ranging from art exhibitions uniting masterpieces by Constantin Brâncuși, Edward Steichen and Remus Botarro, to concerts and performances featuring artists such as Dan Grigore, Oana Pellea, Gheorghe Zamfir and Răzvan Stoica, the organisation has tirelessly promoted Romanian culture in Luxembourg. Encounters with figures such as astronaut Dorin Prunariu have further strengthened Romania’s image as a partner in advancing science and innovation across borders.
A vibrant and respected community
Today, the Romanian community in Luxembourg enjoys a well-earned reputation for professionalism and civic engagement. According to STATEC data, Romanians represent the seventh largest nationality in the country – around 1% of the total population – and the Romanian language ranks among the top ten spoken in the Grand Duchy.
Beyond professional success in sectors such as IT, finance, consulting and European institutions, Romanians have built a strong social and cultural presence through a network of non-profit associations, including Asociația Luxembourg-Roumanie Asbl, Asociația RoKultur, AVRIS și Corul Voci din Carpați, L’Ecole des Valeurs Luxembourg (Școala de Valori) Asbl, Asociația Părinților Români din Luxemburg / Association des Parents Roumains au Luxembourg, and the 30-year-old Romanian Church in Luxembourg. These initiatives preserve Romanian heritage while promoting intercultural understanding.
Charity through culture – Romania at Bazar International de Luxembourg
At RomLux, we believe that networking and business naturally go hand in hand with social responsibility and cultural promotion. There is no better way to bring people together than through culture, good food and shared purpose – especially when that purpose serves a good cause.
One of the clearest illustrations of this mission is Romania’s annual participation at the Bazar International – Luxembourg’s largest multicultural charity event, held under the patronage of Her Royal Highness the Grand Duchess.
As Luxembourg Times described in its article “Gifts for a good cause at the Bazar International”, the event is a celebration of solidarity where every stand contributes to charitable causes worldwide. The Romania Stand at the Bazar International de Luxembourg, coordinated by the RomLux team together with dozens of volunteers, embodies this spirit through authentic food, crafts and traditional art, turning charity into a joyful experience of culture and community.
In our article last year “A Celebration of Charity and Community: Romania’s Vibrant Presence at Bazar International 2024 – Romlux” we recalled the warm atmosphere at the Romania Stand, where visitors enjoyed sarmale and cozonac while supporting humanitarian projects – proof that cultural identity and generosity can go hand in hand.
Even L’Essentiel, in its lively review of the event last year, noted how the mix of flavours and cultures made the Bazar an unforgettable experience, with each country adding its unique “taste” – Romania included.
“I simply can’t stay away from the Romania stand”, says a visitor who, year after year, comes with his family to enjoy traditional Romanian dishes and pick out special Christmas gifts. ”The people at the stand radiate an irresistible friendliness – I simply love the Romanians.”
Knowledge, art and connection
Beyond the Bazar, RomLux continues to nurture knowledge-sharing and creative exchange through initiatives like the RomLux Knowledge Café Series, offering workshops and community learning sessions on very diverse topics. The Romanian-language radio programme In Plain Romanian on Radio ARA, hosted by Raluca Caranfil, also gives voice to the community’s stories and ideas – another bridge between the Romanian diaspora and Luxembourg’s diverse society.
A platform, a community, a bridge between two worlds
Through its economic, cultural and charitable activities, RomLux has become much more than a business forum. It is a living platform where two countries are united by shared values, entrepreneurial spirit and a belief in building together.
We invite all those who share these values to join RomLux and contribute to a stronger, more connected community.
